Illinois State Association of Health Underwriters Elects New Officers

(Chicago, IL) -- The Illinois State Association of Health Underwriters, an organization of health insurance agents, brokers, and allied professionals, installed its 2008-2009 Executive Board last month.

John Garven, a resident of Huntley, was installed as the Association’s president.  Mr. Garven is President and founder of Benico, Ltd., an employee benefits consulting firm.  He is a past president of two local Health Underwriters chapters, has won numerous industry awards, and is associated with the Heartland Institute in Chicago as a policy advisor covering health care issues.

"I am thrilled to be heading this organization at a time when our members are becoming more critical to employers and consumers," said Mr. Garven.  "Agents and brokers help consumers obtain and use one of the most critical and personal services they own.  When a spouse or child is sick, it is the health plans we sell and service that help our clients pay for and manage the financial risk of their health care.  Now more than ever consumers need our expertise in choosing the right plan.  What we do simply cannot be done through a website or by a distant bureaucrat.  Our focus over the next year will be not only to demonstrate this value but to continue enhancing it."

"Agents are on the front line of health care and it is important that we make a big difference," added John.  "We will push for the passage of sensible health care reforms such as refundable tax credits, which will help insure more Americans. We will help improve and spread the word about important coverage such as long-term care insurance. And, we will fight mandates and other policy initiatives and legislation that serve to make health insurance more expensive and less accessible for our citizens."

The new officers are as follows:
  • John Garven, President, Huntley Illinois
  • Michele Thornton, President Elect, Oak Forest, Illinois
  • Lou Reginelli, Vice President, Naperville, Illinois
  • Brenda Franklin, Secretary, Peoria, Illinois
  • Wilbur Mills, Treasurer, Park Ridge, Illinois
