Executive Summary
The Southern Illinois Association of Health Underwriters (SIAHU) was formerly chartered in December of 2008. SIAHU is a local chapter of the National Association of Health Underwriters (NAHU – www.nahu.org) and is also affiliated with the Illinois State Association of Health Underwriters (ISAHU – www.isahu.com).
NAHU, “America’s Benefits Specialists”, was founded in 1930. Its membership is comprised of agents, brokers, and consultants, insurance company representatives, representatives of long term care and disability insurance wholesalers, third party administrators, and other employee benefit industry firms such as pharmacy benefit managers, stop loss carriers, worksite marketing firms.
What is NAHU all about? Quoting NAHU’s Mission Statement … “NAHU will improve its members' ability to meet the health, financial and retirement security needs of all Americans through education, advocacy and professional development.”, and further quoting the organization’s Vision Statement … “Every American will have access to private sector solutions for health, financial and retirement security and the services of insurance professionals.”.
Given the threats that we are all faced with as an industry and our common interests, principally on the legislative front (both in Washington, DC, and in Springfield), it is critically important that the professional agent, broker, and employee benefit provider communities, as well as the health insurance product wholesalers (health, LTCI, disability, etc.), work together to ensure the future viability of our professions while at the same time offer recommendations to legislators and policymakers to make our healthcare system more efficient, coverage more accessible, and premiums more affordable.
